Department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at GPR Klinikum Rüsselsheim

The Institute for Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at GPR Klinikum Rüsselsheim offers modern diagnostic procedures such as MRI, CT, X-ray, and nuclear medicine examinations.

It is headed by Chief Physician Dr. Thilo Gerhards, M.D. In addition to his qualifications in radiology and nuclear medicine, his other specialty is neuroradiology.

The Institute for Radiology and Nuclear Medicine is divided into the sub-specialties of X-ray diagnostics, large-scale imaging (CT/MRI), and nuclear medicine. As a central institute, it provides modern diagnostic imaging services to all medical departments within the hospital.

In addition to caring for inpatients, a large proportion of the examinations are performed on an outpatient basis, particularly in emergency care. Cross-sectional imaging techniques—computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)—constitute a particular focus of our work. Through so-called minimally invasive procedures, such as CT-guided biopsies and drainage tube placements, more complex and physically taxing surgical interventions can often be avoided. A Radiology Information System (RIS) and a Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) are available for the communication of images and findings within the hospital.

Testing Options

The Institute for Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at GPR Klinikum offers a wide range of modern imaging examinations. The most appropriate procedure is selected based on the specific medical issue.

Digital X-ray Examinations in Rüsselsheim
Digital X-ray diagnostics can be used to examine bones, joints, and the lungs, among other things. X-rays can be used, for example, when bone injuries are suspected or to evaluate the lungs.

Digital fluoroscopy in Rüsselsheim
During fluoroscopy examinations, specific areas of the body are dynamically visualized using X-rays and, if necessary, contrast agents. Depending on the clinical question, examinations of the gastrointestinal tract or specialized imaging of blood vessels and fistulas, among other things, can be performed.

Nuclear Medicine Examinations in Rüsselsheim
In nuclear medicine, low-level radioactive substances are used to visualize certain functions and metabolic processes in the body. The range of examinations includes, among others, skeletal, thyroid, cardiac, pulmonary, and renal scintigraphy.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in Rüsselsheim
Magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI for short, provides detailed cross-sectional images of the body without the use of ionizing radiation. At GPR Klinikum, MRI is used, among other things, to examine the head, spine, and joints.

Computed Tomography (CT) in Rüsselsheim
Computed tomography uses X-rays to produce detailed cross-sectional images of the body. At GPR Klinikum, examinations are performed on the head, chest, abdomen, blood vessels, heart, and bones, among other areas.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in Rüsselsheim

For magneticresonance imaging, the GPR Clinic uses a fully digital 1.5-tesla MRI scanner. This allows for many specialized examinations, such as MRI imaging of blood vessels or MR mammography, thereby avoiding invasive procedures or those involving radiation exposure.

The MRI scanner is characterized by significantly increased patient comfort. The device has a considerably larger tubular opening than a standard MRI scanner, resulting in significantly fewer exam interruptions—which were common with conventional MRI scanners due to the narrowness of the scan tunnel. In addition, the typical knocking noises associated with magnetic resonance imaging have been reduced compared to the previous generation of MRI scanners. Furthermore, a new multimedia system is available to help patients relax as much as possible during the examination.

In June 2025, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology received a major upgrade. The integration of Philips’ AI-based SmartSpeed solution has taken diagnostic imaging to a new level. SmartSpeed enables scan times to be accelerated by up to three times while simultaneously improving image resolution by up to 65 percent. These advances help to significantly shorten the duration of examinations for patients and increase diagnostic precision. The technology is compatible with 97 percent of clinical protocols and thus covers a broad spectrum of examinations, including complex anatomical structures and modern contrast-enhanced procedures.

State-of-the-Art Prostate Diagnostics at GPR Klinikum Rüsselsheim

At GPR Klinikum Rüsselsheim and the affiliated Medical Center for Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, the MRI system was enhanced with an AI upgrade. This has significantly improved image quality and established multiparametric prostate MRI with high diagnostic value.

Philips SmartSpeed AI improves imaging by specifically highlighting and precisely rendering relevant structures. At the same time, it reduces image artifacts such as motion blur. This results in significantly higher resolution and improved image quality, particularly for small structures such as the prostate.

Under the leadership of Chief Physician Dr. Guido Platz, the Department of Urology, Pediatric Urology, and Oncological Urologyhas extensive experience with ultrasound-guided fusion biopsies and robotic prostatectomies. The optimized MRI system complements these services and now also enables a complete radiological evaluation of the prostate. Since multiparametric prostate MRI is not currently covered by statutory health insurance, it is billed as an IGeL service.

The goal is to offer patients diagnostics of the highest standard and to ensure a seamless transition to further examinations, including surgical treatment. When biopsies are performed independently in private practices, all image data and findings are provided in the appropriate format.

Computed Tomography (CT) in Rüsselsheim

Computed tomography (CT) is a modern imaging technique that provides rapid and detailed images of specific areas of the body. It plays a particularly important role in the diagnosis of acute illnesses and injuries.

The Institute for Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at GPR Klinikum Rüsselsheim has two CT scanners. One of the machines has a particularly large opening, so it is primarily used to examine critically injured patients, as access to the patient is easier than with machines that have a narrower opening, allowing monitoring and procedures to be performed simultaneously while the patient is being prepared for the CT scan. Furthermore, the machine is used for CT-guided minimally invasive procedures.

The second CT scanner is a 128-slice device that significantly reduces radiation exposure. This scanner is primarily used for examinations of blood vessels and the heart. In the field of cardiology, this CT scanner offers additional diagnostic capabilities; for example, it allows for the visualization of the coronary arteries without the need for a catheterization procedure in specific clinical scenarios.
