“A hospital pharmacy today is a highly complex department within a hospital. This requires leadership that provides direction and actively shapes the current strategic focus,” says Maika Bester, Head of the Hospital Pharmacy and Central Purchasing, as well as Organizational Director of the Center for Hematology and Oncology and a member of the ADKA Committee on Strategic Management.
Key topics included agile leadership, the development of resilient structures, and an intelligent, value-added approach to work in line with lean management principles.
Another focus was on personnel development as well as the recruitment and long-term retention of employees. In light of the competition for skilled workers, various strategies were examined to attract and retain employees over the long term.
“People are the decisive factor in the quality of our work. If you want to attract and retain employees over the long term, you must provide them with opportunities for development, entrust them with responsibility, and create a culture in which change is understood as a shared task,” said GPR Managing Director Achim Neyer.
Practical insights were also provided regarding a pilot initiative for intersectoral counseling of oncology patients. Based on a project at the GPR Clinic, a structured counseling process was examined that incorporated medication management and subsequent outpatient follow-up care. The focus is on cross-sectoral, future-oriented support for patients throughout the entire care pathway—from inpatient treatment through outpatient care to care in private practice.

The two-day symposium thus combined expert insights with practical examples and provided an opportunity to exchange ideas on future-oriented and reflective leadership in hospital pharmacies.
