World Physical Therapy Day: Exercise as an Important Part of Health

Physical activity can prevent diseases, alleviate symptoms, and help people regain independence and quality of life after an illness. World Physical Therapy Day on September 8 draws attention to this fact. This year’s international theme focuses on the role of physical therapy and physical activity in the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of cardiovascular diseases and strokes.

Physical therapy is also an important part of medical care at the GPR Clinic. The GPR PhysioFit Therapy Center provides services for both inpatients and outpatients. Patients receive treatment that includes physical therapy, manual therapy, manual lymphatic drainage, and neurological therapy methods such as Bobath, PNF, and Vojta. The range of services is complemented by medical training therapy (MTT), equipment-assisted physical therapy, prevention courses, and various treatments in the exercise pool.

Targeted exercise can play a particularly important role in recovery, especially for cardiovascular diseases and after a stroke. The international campaign for World Physical Therapy Day 2026 emphasizes that physical therapists can develop individualized exercise programs, motivate patients to engage in regular physical activity, and support them on their journey back to a more active daily life. After a stroke, physical therapy rehabilitation supports mobility, balance, physical functions, and independence, among other things.

“For us, physical therapy isn’t just about treating symptoms. Our goal is to help people become active again and participate in daily life as independently and self-determinedly as possible,” explains Julia Krug, director of the GPR PhysioFit Therapy Center.

Another focus of PhysioFit is medical exercise therapy. Using 15 pieces of medical exercise equipment, patients can improve their endurance and build muscle strength under supervision. An individualized training plan is created for this purpose. Biomechanical vibration training is also part of the program.

The GPR PhysioFit Therapy Center is not limited to GPR patients. Outpatient physical therapy services can be accessed with a doctor’s prescription; certain services are also available to self-paying patients.

World Physical Therapy Day was established in 1996 to be observed on September 8—the founding date of what is now World Physiotherapy in 1951. It provides an opportunity worldwide to raise awareness of the importance of physical therapy and the work of physical therapists.
